Drewnem Pisane (Wood Written) - Behind the scene

Part 4. Types of fountain pens – Ursa

This type of fountain pens is made of ebonite. This interesting material is created by vulcanization of natural or synthetic rubber and by adding sulfur it becomes hard and abrasion-resistant. Ebonite has been known since the second half of the 19th century, but it gained the greatest popularity in the interwar period. Black ebonite plugs, handles, pipes, packaging and pens were used on a daily basis. Today, ebonite can be dyed almost any color, although it is never as intense as resins. However, ebonite is smooth and warm to the touch, which distinguishes it from other materials and may electrify. It's worth taking such a pen in your hand and holding it sometime. You will see how pleasant it can be to the touch. Ebonite fountain pens can be in one color, they can have layers and characteristic and desirable arcs, striped or multi-colored. We always have to buy ebonite for pens and its price depends on the quality, color and place of origin. Unfortunately, it is an expensive and exclusive material, which is reflected in the cost of the pen. We always use Bock nibs for ebonite.
